What is SMART Recovery ®? SMART Recovery ® is a non-profit organization that provides and nurtures self-empowerment over addiction and addictive behaviors. This self-help support group appeals to individuals who want to take charge of their lives and recovery by remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol. The Smart Recovery program offers some face-to-face meetings and virtual meetings for those looking for an alternative to AA or NA meetings. Smart Recovery is a secular recovery program that is research and evidence-based and uses tools to help the person change negative and self-defeating thoughts in order to help with recovery. SMART Recovery ® Tools
The SMART Recovery ® 4-Point Program employs a variety of tools and techniques to help individuals gain independence from addictive behaviors.SMART Recovery ® program follows a 4-point program which includes:
*Point 1: Enhancing and Maintaining (motivation to abstain.)
*Point 2: Coping with urges
*Point 3: Problem Solving (Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors)
*Point 4: Lifestyle Balance (balancing momentary and enduring satisfactions)
Participants are encouraged to learn how to use each tool presented to them and learn how to use these tools and techniques as they progress toward Point 4 of the program, achieving lifestyle balance and leading a fulfilling and healthy life.

What you can gain from enrolling in the SMART Recovery ® program
SMART Recovery ® (Self-Management And Recovery Training) program helps individuals gain independence from addictive behaviors (substances or activities).*Teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance.
*Works on addictions/compulsions as complex maladaptive behaviors with possible physiological factors.
*Teaches what tools and techniques are needed for self-directed change.
*Encourages individuals to recover and live satisfying lives.
*Meetings are educational and include open discussions.
*Advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments.
*Evolves as scientific knowledge evolves.
The program uses various tools and has homework assignments to help its members work through these four points of recovery. Meetings usually last about an hour and a half and are run by trained facilitators. To maintain consistency worldwide, meetings typically follow the same format.
