Substance abuse-related deaths have risen in the past two years from 2019 to 2021 with alcohol-related deaths rising by 38%, and drug overdose deaths climbing 64%, stimulant overdose deaths up by 20%. The total rate of deaths attributed to alcohol or substance abuse in the whole state rose 120% among Iowans over the age of 25; this is driven largely by opioid-related deaths. Fentanyl was implicated in 83% of the most recent deaths showing how this drug has impacted communities all over the state.
