The latest drug control addiction statistics for the state of Iowa have been released, and the numbers are shocking. According to recent data released by the federal government, Iowa’s binge drinking, alcohol, and tobacco use are at a rate well above the national average. Substance abuse-related deaths have risen in the past two years from 2019 to 2021, with alcohol-related deaths rising by 38%, and drug overdose deaths climbing 64%, stimulant overdose deaths up by 20%. The total rate of deaths attributed to alcohol or substance abuse in the whole state rose 120% among Iowans over the age of 25; this is driven largely by opioid-related deaths. Fentanyl was implicated in 83% of the most recent deaths showing how this drug has impacted communities all over the state.
