What is Vaping?
When a person vapes medical marijuana, they inhale a vapor made from a liquid or dry cannabis flower that is heated in an electronic-powered device, called a vaporizer, or dab pen. The liquid can contain flavoring, with marijuana concentrates. Dry herb vape devices can heat dry marijuana without combusting it and without using additional liquid. Generally, the vaping device consists of a battery, a cartridge for containing the cannabis oil, dab, or dry marijuana, and a heating component. Vaping devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with some resembling USB flash drives, pens, or other everyday objects that are often difficult for parents and teachers to recognize.
Vaping weed vs smoking weed
Smoking and vaping medical marijuana both will carry risks especially since using e-cigarettes or other vaping products health effects are not well known. The State and Federal Health Authorities in 2019 began investigating a severe lung disease outbreak that was associated with e-cigarettes and other vaping products. The agencies involved are closely monitoring the situation.
What are the dangers of vaping marijuana?
When you compare vaping and smoking marijuana (cannabis, medical marijuana) the side effects are similar. However, vaping devices can contain heavy metals and other carcinogens. This can compound the negative effects and worsen the response that the body typically has to cannabis products. A recent study was published in the Journal of Thorax that compared the effects on the lungs of people who vaped Cannabis to those who vaped nicotine. The results found that Cannabis is more harmful than nicotine. The study looked at the pulmonary effects of vaping 50 mg/ml of cannabidiol/ vs 5.0% nicotine in mice and human lung epithelial cells. The conclusion was that vaping cannabis could be more harmful than Nicotine vaping in terms of lung damage, pulmonary barrier integrity disruption, and lung inflammation. Cannabis vaping could also increase the chances of respiratory infections and suppress the immune responses to vaccinations. For those with lung inflammatory disease symptoms could worsen. The dangers of vaping can include the following symptoms:
*Asthma. Vaping can make you more likely to get asthma and other lung conditions. It can make your existing asthma worse.
*Lung scarring. Diacetyl, a chemical used in some flavorings, can cause bronchiolitis obliterans (“popcorn lung”). Bronchiolitis obliterans causes permanent scarring in your lungs.
*Organ damage. In addition to your lungs, nicotine and other substances in e-liquid can hurt your heart and brain. We know nicotine can hurt brain development, raise your blood pressure, and narrow your arteries.
*EVALI (e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury). EVALI is a serious lung condition that vaping causes. It causes widespread damage to your lungs and gives you symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. EVALI can be fatal.
*Second-hand exposure. Vaping doesn’t make smoke, but people around you are exposed to marijuana and other chemicals when you vape.
*Explosions. There have been incidents of batteries in vaping devices exploding and causing serious injuries and burns.
*Cancer. Some ingredients in e-liquids are known to cause cancer.

Harmful Ingredients
Vaporized medical cannabis can have harmful chemicals other than cannabis THC. This is in part due to the lack of regulation surrounding vaping products. The lack of ingredients listed on a large percentage of vaping products was not consistent with the actual ingredients in the product. The lack of federal regulation leaves the vaping regulation up to the states which can typically be little if any state regulations.Below we have listed a few of the harmful ingredients used in vaping products including CBD, THC, Delta 8, and nicotine.
Heavy Metals: Vaping devices can use these little metal loops lining the inside of the product to heat the liquid which over time can break down and enter the liquid that you are vaping. Some products, in order to keep costs down, use inferior metals that break down quicker.
Carcinogenic Substances: Some vaping products contain carcinogenic compounds, these substances are believed to cause cancer when they are heated up. This can heighten the risks of developing lung cancer.
Chemical flavors: Some vaping products add flavors to their vape juice, however, some of the products contain chemicals like Diacetyl which has been known to pose a health threat especially when heated up.
Atmospheric Aerosol Particles: These are very fine particles that can be found in vaping liquid that you are inhaling when consuming cannabis. These particles are often found in e-cigarettes and other products that are battery-powered or that have refillable cartridges or pods.
Health effects of vaping cannabis
Recent studies suggest that vaping cannabis is safer than smoking the dried flower form of marijuana due to having fewer chemicals than when smoking marijuana. However, the use of higher potency concentrates, like those used in vape pens has been shown to lead to a higher risk of developing mental health and physical health problems. This can lead to a higher risk of developing acute adverse reactions like paranoia, Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome, and psychosis. With the lack of evidence comparing long-term effects on lung health, the jury is still out on how these products affect lung health. Vaping liquids, especially those that contain artificial flavorings can contain several harmful carcinogenic aerosols. While there is still much to be discovered about the short- and long-term effects of these aerosols on the developing adolescent’s lungs, the significant presence of carbonyls, volatile organics, nitrosamines, and heavy metals, all considered toxic and carcinogenic, found in several vaping products, is a reason for concern.Teen Health and Vaping Cannabis
Parents are becoming more and more concerned with their kids’ vaping habits.Parents have already been worried about teens vaping nicotine, while vaping has increased in record numbers among the teen or young adult population. The latest trend of teens vaping marijuana products has parents concerned about the long-term effects that vaping has on the brain development and lung health of their children. Now with the introduction of Delta 8, vaping some form of THC products is legal in most states.
