This report reflects significant trends, data, and major issues relating to drugs in the State of West Virginia.
West Virginia At-a-Glance: In 2009-2010, West Virginia was one of the top ten states for rates of drug use in several categories, including past month use of illicit drugs other than marijuana among persons age 12 or older; past-month use of illicit drugs other than marijuana among young adults age 18-25; past-year nonmedical pain reliever use among young adults age 18-25; illicit drug dependence among persons age 12 or older; and illicit drug dependence among young adults age 18-25. Source: National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 2009-2010. Approximately 8.4 percent of West Virginia residents reported past-month illicit drug use; the national average was 8.82 percent. In 2009, the rate of drug-induced deaths in West Virginia was higher than the national average. From 2004-2008 three West Virginia counties ranked in the top ten for rates of drug poisoning deaths in the nation. These counties include the highest (58.7 deaths per 100,000 population in Wyoming County), the 2nd highest (58.1 deaths per 100,000 population in McDowell County), and the 8th highest (45.1 deaths per 100,000 population in Logan County). In 2010, the percentage of drug treatment admission rates in West Virginia for non-heroin opiates reached 59 percent.

Additionally, 4.18 percent of West Virginia residents reported using an illicit drug other than marijuana in the past month (the national average was 3.6 percent). West Virginia addiction statistics and national trends are provided to help understand the scope and consequences that addiction can have if left unchecked. West Virginia’s percentage of the state’s population drug use in the fiscal year 2015 the latest SAMHSA statistics available. Marijuana use in West Virginia in the past month estimates for the age group 12-17 is estimated at 6.05% of the population and 7.00% for those in the group over 18. Cocaine use statistics in West Virginia are estimated at 0.59% for the 12-17 age group and for those over the age of 18, it is estimated that 1.63% of the population has used cocaine in the past year. Heroin use in West Virginia for the age group 12-17 is estimated to be 0.12% and over 18 the percentage of people that use heroin is estimated to be 0.38% of the population. Alcohol use among those 12 to 17 years of age is 9.97% of the population and for the 18 and over demographic 44.08% used alcohol in the last month. Those that have had serious thoughts of suicide in the state of West Virginia over the past statistical year 2015 is only available for the population over 18 and that is at 4.23% of the population.
