This report reflects significant trends, data, and major issues relating to drugs in the State of Nevada. Nevada At-a-Glance: In 2009-2010, Nevada was one of the top ten states for rates of drug use in several categories, including past-month use of illicit drugs other than marijuana among teenagers aged 12-17; and past-year nonmedical use of pain relievers among teenagers 12-17. Source: National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 2009-2010. In 2009, the rate of drug-induced deaths in Nevada was significantly higher than the national average. Approximately 9.7 percent of Nevada residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs; the national average was 8.82 percent. Stimulants, including methamphetamine, are the most commonly cited drugs among primary drug treatment admissions in Nevada. Drug Use in Nevada: The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides national and state-level data on the use of tobacco, alcohol,
illicit drugs (including non-medical use of prescription drugs), and mental health in the United States. In the most recent Survey, 9.7 percent of Nevada residents reported using illicit drugs in the past month. The national average was 8.82 percent. Additionally, 4.7 percent of Nevada residents reported using an illicit drug other than marijuana in the past month (the national average was 3.6 percent). Nevada is facing some of the highest numbers of citizens who are heavily medicated. Nevada ranks 2nd highest for hydrocodone prescriptions written 2nd highest for oxycodone prescriptions written, 4th highest in Methadone dispensing, and is the 7th highest overall for codeine prescriptions. Cocaine use in Nevada for the fiscal year 2015 for age groups between 12-17 years old is at 0.72% and for those over the age of 18 is at 1.54% and this is a need for concern for Nevada Residents. Heroin use in Nevada for the age group 12-17 is estimated to be 0.14% of the population for that age group and is estimated at 0.35% of the populous over 18 in the state. Alcohol use in Nevada statistics have been gathered for the fiscal year 2015 by SAMHSA and are an estimate of a 95% confidence rate for the survey. It is estimated that 13.67% of the age group 12-17 has used alcohol in the past month and 56.84 of the populous used alcohol last month. Nevada residents that have had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year reported by SAMHSA details only those over the age of 18 with 4.45% of the population having serious thoughts of suicide.
