In 2010-2011, Alaska was one of the top ten states for rates of drug use in several categories, including past-month illicit drug use among persons age 12 or older; past-month illicit drug use among young adults age 18-25; past-month marijuana use among persons age 12 or older; past-year nonmedical pain reliever use among persons age 26 or older; and illicit drug dependence or abuse among persons 12-17. Source: National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2010-2011. Approximately 13.65 percent of Alaska residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs; the national average was 8.82 percent. In 2010, the rate of drug-induced deaths in Alaska was lower than the national average.
Drug Use in Alaska: The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides national and state-level data on the use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs (including nonmedical use of prescription drugs), and mental health in the United States. In the most recent Survey, 13.65 percent of Alaska residents reported using illicit drugs in the past month. The national average was 8.82 percent. Additionally, 3.62 percent of Alaska residents reported using an illicit drug other than marijuana in the past month (the national average was 3.33 percent). Cocaine use in Alaska for the fiscal year of 2015 for the age groups between 12-17 years old is at .65% and for those over the age of 18 is at 2.15% and there is a need for concern for Alaskan residents.
Heroin use in Alaska for the age group 12-17 is estimated to be 0.08% of the population for that age group and is estimated to be 1.36% of the populous over 18 in Alaska.
Alcohol use in Alaska statistics have been gathered for the fiscal year 2015 by SAMHSA are an estimate and within a 95% confidence rate for the survey. It is estimated that 11.04% of the age group 12-17 has used alcohol in the past month and 59.95%.
Alaska residents that have had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year reported by SAMHSA, detail only those over the age of 18. With 4.68% of the population having serious thoughts of suicide, there is a need for those who have been affected by drugs or alcohol to get help before those thoughts turn into actions.
